How does Farmville make money? Plain and simple, they make most of their money from advertising. With the amount of daily and monthly active users that visit their games, they can make substantial profit from this. Since they also have lots of games, they have free advertising for them within each game. How did they get you? Probably while you were playing a competitors game. If not, perhaps you saw the ad while playing one of their other Facebook games. They take most of their advertising money, or perhaps investor capital, and spend it on advertising in competitors games to gather new users. In the end, they make much more money. Very interesting, really.
Farmville surpasses one million fans
After checking out the official fan page of Farmville today, I noticed that they surpassed one million fans. Not surprising, since they are the #1 application in facebook right now and approaching 50 million monthly active users.
How did they do this? Numbers, plain and simple. Across all their games, Zynga actually has over 100 million monthly active users. Imagine that?! Well, Mafia Wars is a very popular game which supports much of this, as well as a popular Poker game they have.
Farmville’s Massive Advertising Spending
How did Farmville go from being at the bottom of the top 10 in Facebook games, to being the number one? Simply put: advertising. The game developer Zynga is not shy about the fact that they are spending between $2-3 million per month on MySpace advertising.

Farmville is a game on Facebook, made by Zynga games. It is, at this publication date, the #1 farming game on facebook, the #1 game on facebook, and also #1 application used on facebook. The game bears a striking resemblance to Farm Town, and if you have played it before you will know exactly how to play Farmville.
According to an Allfacebook.com article, Zynga has been repeatedly accused of “borrowing” game ideas from other companies. Some others have even decided to step up and try to compete on the very successful farm game genre: Barn Buddy and Country Story.
The main improvement of Farmville over other games is that it doesn’t have quite as many bugs as other farm games. This is a big selling point because the other games have caused much frustration with that.
